Questions & Answers for MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot

Question
If the mifi unit is connected to a laptop via the supplied USB cable, can you access the web through the cable, rather than through wifi?

Yes.
When the MiFi is connected to the laptop with the USB cable it doesn't produce a WiFi signal until you unplug it. Instead it provides internet for the connected laptop as well as changing settings on the device and updating Firmware. The device also charges while plugged in.

No. The data cord is to provide access to the device's firmware update. You will have to connect to the web using the wifi signal.

No. The MiFi only supports CDMA 1xEVDO RevA Networks. Sprint (which Virgin Mobile uses as it's network provider) uses WiMAX 802.16e for it's 4G service. This device will not connect to 4G since it does not have the proper radios to pick up a WiMAX signal.

Used the mifi to connect a blackberry phone, a Dell netbook 8.9" running Linux Ubuntu 8.04, an ipad2, and an android tablet running honeycomb 3.1, all at the same time :-) I have no experience with the USB device, only the mifi mobile hotspot.

my 2 netbooks (gateway and acer) would connect but could not get internet access. my laptop sitting next to it had no problem. i called tech support and they said a netbook or i-touch could not get access to the internet. all monies were refunded and best buy did not charge a re-stocking fee.

answer 6
The USB should work on a netbook, but sometimes it won't work on smaller ones. The smaller the netbook, the less of a chance the USB will work on it.

answer 7
Yes. If the USB modem, you need an open USB port. If the MiFi, you need to enable your WiFi connection. This assumes a Windows based netbook.

no, you should rather connect the wireless printer to your computer.

and as virgin said:" Note: Wi-Fi enabled devices must be 802.11b or 802.11g to connect to the MiFi device."

Question
Password Protected
The wifi that can connect 5, can you have it password protected so that only a certain few that you trust can use it. Does that make sense? I purchase the 5GB. When I connect it, turn it on, whatever, will I have to enter a password to use it?

There is a password in the back of that device. You only only have to enter it once when you setup the software. Only the people you trust can use it. And only you know the password.

Yes (WEP, WAP, etc). Check the manual starting on page 25 (which you can download from the Device tab on this web site). It also supports MAC filtering so you can load the MAC address for your devices and only those can connect.

In the management screen in the Mifi, there is a WWAN status, which has a listing of how much data used. This is not exactly what shows on your account, but it's pretty close.

FYI, for reference, if you are streaming Pandora from your iPod touch, is uses about 30MB/hr.

I've noticed for typical laptop use, it uses about 50MB/hr.

you can install an iphone application called "mifi" to your ipod touch and it will track how much time you used each session (and it will tell you how much charge the battery has left), but to see how much time you've used the last 10 or 30 day top up period, you have to log in to your account. You can do it from the ipod touch using safari. Either go to the virginmobile web based control panel, or you can just log in at their regular web site using the "phone number" of your mifi and the password to gain access to your broadband2go account.

I got mine yesterday at Best Buy. They only had a few on the shelf, though. Go to their website, look for it, and do in-store pickup, to save driving around looking for it. That is what I did.
