I've been using this phone daily for a couple of weeks now and I think the touch interface is fine. It did take a bit of acclimatizing at first, it's not like using the trackpad on your laptop so yes, a bit "hit-and-miss" to begin with but you soon get used to it and errors drop way down.
Since it is resistive (not capacitative) you'll need to use slightly more pressure, and dragging or scrolling is a slower, more deliberate motion than the light flick of the fingertip on an iphone. On the plus side, you can use a fingernail or stylus. I really am thankful for the stylus option when trying to press a tiny link or button on a crowded web page.
