You didn't mention which USB stick you own. Indeed, the Ovation MC760 USB Stick with 3G is not Windows 8 compatible.

The U600 should work with any system that meets the following System Requirements. If your system doesn't meet the System Requirements then consider the Netgear Mingle.

► SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS - U600
   • Mac Requirements: Mac OS X, 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 only
   • Windows Requirements: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.
   • Your Mac or Windows PC must have a USB port available to connect to the U600 device.

Your Virgin Mobile account is setup using a browser window. The U600 is also configured using a browser window. The U600's device drivers will be
downloaded to your Mac or Windows PC from the U600. You must use a Mac or Windows PC to setup your Virgin Mobile account and configure the U600.
The U600 can only be used by one Mac or Windows PC at a time. The U600 does not create a Wi-Fi hotspot.

See the U600 user manual at http://www.virginmobileusa.com/resources/phones/prepaid/manual/U600-Broadband2Go-User-Guide.pdf

►►NOTE: The software on the U600 device does not support Windows 8 or Mac OS 10.8. A software download from the Virgin Mobile website is required. Do not follow the installation instructions provided with the device. Download the U600 User Guide and follow the installation instructions in the User Guide for Windows 8 or Mac OS 10.8. ◄◄

See the U600 user manual at http://www.virginmobileusa.com/resources/phones/prepaid/manual/U600-Broadband2Go-User-Guide.pdf

Sorry, the Netgear Mingle is the only Broadband2Go device currently available.

If you have a Virgin Mobile phone that is capable of generating a mobile hotspot then you'll have to get the $5 per day Hotspot option.

► You need the following to create a Mobile Hotspot via Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11):

     1. One of the Unlimited service plans ($35, $45, or $55 per month)
     2. The $5 per day Hotspot option in your Virgin Mobile account
     3. One of these Unlimited services phones:
(uses 3G network only) Apple iPhone 4s, Kyocera Event
(uses 4G LTE and 3G networks) HTC Desire, HTC Desire 816, Kyocera Hydro Vibe, LG Optimus F3, LG Volt, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy SIII,
                                                                 Samsung Galaxy Victory

Log into your account. [MANAGE MY ACCOUNT at the top of this page.] On the Account Overview tab click on 'Change My Plan'. From there you can
see the plans and options that are available for your phone.

Question
Is the Netgear Mingle sufficient for primary / home use?
I am moving into a new place soon, and would prefer not to deal with Comcast. I discovered that Clear has been acquired by Sprint, and they don't seem to have what I'm looking for. I am a standard web-surfer with the occasional Netflix. I assume this device would suit my needs as far as quality, streaming video is concerned. I suppose the issue would be exceeding 6gb allotment.?? Thanks

Yes. But keep in mind that your wired internet service may provide some services that Broadband2Go doesn't such as a home page, email, and other services. Your current wired internet service is much faster, more robust, and can provide more data every month than Broadband2Go. But wired internet service is not mobile like Broadband2Go. Broadband2Go is the best choice when you need internet access away from home or the office or where hotspots and wired internet service are not available.

Broadband2Go provides MOBILE wireless internet connections for computing devices like laptops, tablets, phones, game consoles, etc. Although Broadband2Go can replace wired internet connections the plans are very expensive for that purpose. Wired internet connections can provide more data, faster speeds, and stronger uninterrupted connections than Broadband2Go. On the other hand, wired internet connections are not mobile.

You can pay for another plan when you use your 6 GB. This may get expensive if you download videos, music, etc.
